Death on the Beach

July 18, 2017

a hundred pin-up women were executed

on the beach

in a dream I had

instagram models in flawless bodies

staring towards the sea

I couldn’t see their faces, only the red holes

in their spines as a rifle echoed

the girl in the white one piece with perfect shoulders

falling funny onto her knees then bending onto her back,

the front of the white suit watercolor red

sand sticks to hair differently on the dead

even if they’ve been dead a second

men like me were on their hotel balconies

only a throwing distance away if you had a good arm

which one man had, who hurled a glass bottle

at the scene – it didn’t break when it landed

soft next to a pool of blood and ocean kelp

there was hollering then, more men coming to the balconies

to shout things at the fevered sun, the setting tide

some dream buried memory, a premonition of what

what has always been

the waves frothy with violence

the sands reddening evermore
